Shenley Walk
St Mary’s Church Shenley
Beginning in the car park of St Mary’s Church, enter the churchyard to observe the church. Walking past the entrance to the church, exit the churchyard onto Shenley Road and turn left, walking past Shenley Church End Parish Council offices on your right and Dudley Hill, which leads to the car park of the church, on your left. Continue down along Shenley Road, going straight over Burchard Crescent, underneath Watling Street, where you will meet London Road. The Talbot Inn will be in front of you, slightly to the left. Right onto London Road Turn right here on to London Road and past the Harvester Fountain Inn on your left. Left onto a pathway Before you reach Thorwold Place, turn left onto a pathway between the houses which leads to Ashpole Furlong. Follow the road Turn left and follow the road as it curves slightly, crossing over the road, which is also Ashpole Furlong, and on to Whitworth Lane. On your right are fields which contain the earthworks of a medieval site, now home to Ride High ponies. On your left are modern houses. Walk along Whitworth Lane and just before it turns a sharp left you will see a redway pathway on your right that will lead you next to a brook on your right. This short pathway leads on to Leys Road. Over a small bridge Turn immediately right, over a small bridge and over the brook and then turn left on to School Lane. Walk up School Lane and at the top of the hill, All Saints Church will be on your left. Left onto Church Lane After exploring the church, turn left on to Church Lane and walk all the way down the hill until you meet Bradwell Road. Left onto Linceslade Grove Turn right and then immediately left on to Linceslade Grove. After you have passed Lucy Lane, on you left, you will see a pathway, again on your left which explores the southern section of the Loughton Valley Park. Follow the brook Turn left on to this pathway. The brook will be on your right. Continue alone this path, past the stepping stones and keeping the brook on your right, until you come to a small bridge, taking you over the brook to the right. The pathway brings you out on to a road called The Green, for obvious reasons! Cross over The Green and the Grumpy Cook Cross straight over The Green and continue along the pathway, with recreation fields on your left and the Pirate Play Park on your right. Go through the car park for the recreation ground and The Grumpy Cook cafe and turn left on to Linceslade Grove. Past the school Take an almost immediate left on to Paynes Drive. Walk along Paynes Drive, Loughton School will be on your right. Right and back to the church Just after the school grounds, turn right on to Bradwell Road, past the school and you will see The Talbot Inn once again, this time on your right. From here we retrace our steps, straight over London Road, back up Shenley Road and right on to Dudley Hill, to reach the church car park where the route began. |
